Go Canada and whatnot but Women's Hockey is a failure as an Olympic sport.

I heard on the radio this morning figures on how many women play Hockey around the world:

- Canada has 85,000 women registered to play Hockey.
- US America has around 60,000 women. (which is surprising) I guess since it's an NCAA sport it gets some cred.
- Finland has less than 4,000
- Russia, Yeah the Great Russia has less than 300.

This isn't an Olympic sport it's Canada v USA cat fight.

Canada beat the Silver Medalist from Turin: Sweden 13-1 yesterday.

THE THIRD BEST NATION GOT PWNED 13-1!!!!!!!!

Yeah Sweden beat US America last Olympics but this Olympics it's basically just those two teams. They are like pro teams, they play together all year leading up to the Olympics, and they play against men's teams to tune up. The other teams are just house league scrubs.

Should the sport be banned from the Olympics like Softball and Baseball did?

I agree, wimmins hockey is pointless. I don't need to see the canadian women beat some scrub team 20 gadzillion to 1 every game. It's way too watered down. I'd like a see a substitute of women's strip beer pong or something. Kool Aid

Womens hockey sucks - period - and should be removed from the Olympics.  They can skate, but they don't have the strength to shoot the puck.  I once had lobbied that they should play with a lighter puck, but that would simply mean that Canada and the US would kill the other nations by even greater totals than they already do.

I like the nekked pong idea - now if only we could convince the IOC to sanction it...

I'm one of the few that supports women's sports, (my sister played in the Canada Games in 3 different sports and my aunt was on our National volleyball team at the 78 Commonwealth Games so I kinda have to,) but I think the biggest problem plaguing women's hockey is Team Canada.

This dates back to Cassie Campbell's reign of terror as defacto head of the entire program, the program refuses to do anything to help develop the sport in other countries. (Something their US counterpart has actually done at least in the world of inline hockey.) At various functions the team would do here in Winnipeg the players would always say the same thing; winning is the only thing that matters to us, everyone else can cry us a river. That's all well and good but if you have NOBODY to play against, you are nothing more than the Globetrotters beating up the Washington Generals and your game ceases to be a sport.

What's worse is that Canada's women's program became so arrogant during the Cassie era that we had a revolving door coaching policy and Hockey Canada has done everything in their power to derail a real women's elite league and/or elite program at all. (The deal breaker has always been the idea of allowing US born players to come up here and play in such a league. Cassie in particular always cited DEEP personal issues with the Americans players while completely ignoring the fact that any Canadian player with skill can get an NCAA hockey scholarship with a great school.) This has crippled our ability to develop our own players and that makes the quality of play that much worse. (For all the hype Jennifer Botteril gets in Winnipeg, the bottom line is that she has absolutely NO hockey sense whatsoever.)

Hayley Wickenheiser and Danielle Goyette are the exceptions to this rule but both have also played against higher levels of competition for far longer. The people running the program can't seem to understand this and it has badly effected the quality of play of their opposition as well as their own. I wouldn't agree with killing the sport at the Olympic level until Ballroom Dancing and any other judged sport is also removed but I don't want to be around to watch the women's Worlds or Olympic tournament when Hayley retires.

You lost me after the second paragraph but it's good to see you put a lot of thought into the subject.

They should scrap the tournament and just have Canada and the US play a seven game series over the course of the Olympics.

Or scrap it totally, I don't give a shit.

As much as I think the sport is a joke, I'm certainly going to watch the Canada v USA match tonight. That game is the only interesting part of the entire sport. The two teams hate each other.

Canada wins and they move ahead of US America in the Gold Medal standings.  Kool Aid

Canada just won 2-nil. That's usually the way in Canada/USA games, VERY low scoring. At one point USA missed a full 2 minute 2 man-advantage and only mustered 4 shots on the power play over all. (Not much worse than Canada managing only 5 shots in as many PP chances.)

Bad hockey game overall to a point where neither team seemed to know what to do with the puck when they got it.

Those Canadian hockey chicks look like they all evolve in the same gene pool. They also looked like hobbits compared to The American chicks.
