This setlist looks like eclecticism for it's own sake. Please explain how you discriminate between what is bad, what is good, and what is best.

That is valid, then again our stations positioning statement is 'your eclectic music station' and I try to perscibe to that. However as I am sure you can plainly see I do have a leaning towards the 60's and 70's.
Ok this is going to get long winded!
Back in 1999 when I started the show it was much more rock based AOR leaning, but I always pitched the show as including material 'from today that echoes those days of yore' but ussually meant some phish or DMB, and the occasional band who would send me material as I have always been considered to be the stations 'jam band' guy.
However a few years back the guy who comes on after me turned me onto a wealth of material based upon what is called the Whitburn list which is the list of every song that charted on the big board (billboard top 100) for a given year and over the course of about 8 months copied me everything from 1956 thru 2006. That in combination with being turned onto a couple of jam band based promoters meant the show is now less about 'classic rock' as opposed to being about what I find 'classic' material regardless of genre, though again the rock leanings are obvious.
I tend to shy away from current commercial material.. though as you can see there are exceptions...but then again the Coldplay was on the station automation! I also tend to stay away from material I know the oldies and classic rock stations play, if it was popular at one time it ussually is something that has been forgotten. Again there are exceptions...and it seems there are becoming more every day..not because I am trying to be conformist but because I am noticing that at least around here the oldies station in particular actually tries to give an honest representation of what the musical past of the country is about as opposed to the 300-500 song uber researched playlist that many stations resign themselves to accepting. The Classic rock or AOR material mines many of the artist who are the staples of those genres but with an attempt to be more adventerous.
In short here is an approximate breakdown of the music mix I seek for any given show.
45-60 tracks per outing
15-25% 'instant classic or recent vintage' IE material from really the past decade example from this play list: Umphrey's McGee, Tom Grose, MOE, Hobex
40-60% deep cut AOR ex. Joni Mitchell, Steely Dan, Chicago
10-20% stuff that charted but really fell thru the tracks IE didnt quite enter or barely made the top 40 but which still charted in the top 100 IE Pigmeat Markum, Bill Withers, Goose Creek Symphony
10-20% songs that were hits but which are now essentially forgotten with a little bit of emphasis on the cheese IE Inez Foxx, New Vaudeville Band, Acker Bilk, Al Hirt
At least twice per show I try to mix in something pre-beatles, same goes for mid 80's to mid-late 90's, though those two guidelines tend to be followed loosely.
Of course with the amount of material I have and the fact that I tend for the most part to fly by the seat of my pants means the show gets a spontanious if somewhat mecurial quality. But more than anything it is about coming up with unique combinations, sometimes it is about up with combinations that are nice complements to each other like the WAR into the Mama Cass, sometimes it is about coming up with diametric opposites, such as the Garaj Mahal into the Statler Brothers.
As for what is bad, what is good and what is best, I feel it is much more subjective, sometimes a bad song can sound awfully good if it is positioned the right way.

The final edition of the Classic Corner will be January 3rd but starting tonight at midnight I will debut a new show, Night Flight, tonight will be a test edition and it will start proper January 9th. probably going to be voicetracking a lot of it, but this slot does have it's advantages. More freedom musically and I plan to have a lot better production values. Hope yall tune in.
